Soy Sesame Salmon Tartare with Avocado served on Cucumber Rounds

Soy Sesame Salmon Tartare with Avocado served on Cucumber Rounds

Today, I am sharing a recipe for an appetizer I’ve made more times than I can remember over the years, this Soy Sesame Salmon Tartare with Avocado. It is one of the easiest no-cook appetizer recipes and uses just a few fresh ingredients – salmon, scallions, avocado, soy sauce, sesame oil, lime juice and a few garnishes for serving.

After all the heavier foods over the holidays, this light, fresh appetizer would be perfect for celebrating the New Year. I’m actually thinking of making an assortment of small bites for our family’s New Year celebration, including serving this Salmon Tartare on thin sesame rice crackers. It’ll be more fun grazing on a variety of appetizers than sitting down to a big meal.

There are so many different ways I’ve served this Soy Sesame Salmon Tartare, each time a bit different, but always to rave reviews. If you’re feeling a little bit fancy, try tossing all the ingredients in this recipe together and serving it in mini martini glasses or shot glasses. It’s actually even faster to serve it this way and just as pretty.

Soy Sesame Salmon Tartare with Avocado

This is a super easy and quick recipe that can be put together very quickly. It should be served as soon as it is tossed together.
Prep Time 15 minutes
Total Time 15 minutes
Servings 4 -6 Appetizer Portions

Ingredients

Soy Sesame Salmon Tartare with Avocado

  • 1/2 pound fresh salmon fillet diced (sushi-grade)
  • 2 teaspoons scallions finely minced
  • 1 teaspoons gluten-free soy sauce
  • 1 teaspoons mirin
  • 1/2 teaspoon sesame oil
  • 1 avocado diced
  • juice from one fresh lime
  • salt

For Serving

  • English cucumber thinly sliced
  • Ichimi Togarashi Japanese seven flavor chili pepper
  • fresh chives or scallions finely minced
  • black sesame seeds optional

Instructions

To make Soy Sesame Tartare with Avocado

  1. In a medium bowl, mix together salmon, scallions, soy sauce, mirin and sesame oil.
  2. In a small bowl, gently toss avocado, lime juice and salt to taste.

To Serve

  1. Spoon Salmon Tartare on top of cucumber rounds, then top with a little chopped avocado. Sprinkle some Ichimi Togarashi or black sesame seeds, and chives on top to garnish. Serve immediately.

Recipe Notes

There are so many ways to serve this simple appetizer. You could mix the avocado and lime juice in with the salmon tartare and simply serve it on top of cucumber rounds or rice crackers. For a more elegant presentation, dice the cucumber and add it to the salmon tartare and avocado, and serve in martini glasses.

I might have to add a tiny bit of Sriracha into this, because I love it with avocado. Beautiful appetizer and a perfect way to start the new year.

I’ve never quite fancied entrees because I always forget that it’s an entree and eat as much as I would the main course! Haha ^^
I definitely love these ingredients; very fresh. Oh, and I love the photos.
Happy New Years to you too!!

I love little bites more than entrees – when we go out to eat, I often order just a few appetizers instead of an entree.

Raw salmon is actually the one non-vegetarian food I just can’t shake…I love these little tartares! I would eat so many of them that they would count as my main meal.

      Hi Susanna,
I buy my salmon from the fish market when I serve it tartare style. Although I have bought Costco’s salmon, I have only served it cooked as I’m not really sure how fresh it is and if it is safe to eat it raw.
