Roasted Old Bay Shrimp - these are so delicious and easy to make - perfect for a quick party appetizer with a kick, better than plain old shrimp cocktail
Roasted Old Bay Shrimp - these are so delicious and easy to make - perfect for a quick party appetizer with a kick, better than plain old shrimp cocktail

Roasted Old Bay Shrimp is an easy and delicious appetizer. Serve with cocktail sauce if you like. My family loves Old Bay seasoning, a spice blend I grew up enjoying on steamed Maryland crabs. Old Bay seasoning is a blend of  celery salt, red pepper, black pepper, paprika and other “secret” spices. It goes well with most seafood, including shrimp. Roasting shrimp is a quick and easy method that enhances the flavor of shrimp more than steaming. It’s great for making a large quantity of shrimp cocktail for a party.

I grew up in Maryland so steamed crabs with Old Bay seasoning have a special place in my heart. For a special treat I’ll sometimes mail order some Maryland crabs for our family to keep the tradition going. Since crabs are hard to come by and extremely expensive to mail order, I made Roasted Old Bay Shrimp for a family celebration recently. It’s such an easy recipe and takes just minutes to prepare and roast.

I use frozen shrimp that’s been peeled and deveined already to cut down on the prep time. The best way to defrost shrimp is to let it sit in the refrigerator overnight. The shrimp is seasoned with fresh garlic and Old Bay Seasoning, then roasted for 10-12 minutes until just cooked through. Serve with cocktail sauce if you like or if you’re an Old Bay purist, just eat it straight.

Roasted Old Bay Shrimp is a great party appetizer because it’s quick, easy and a nice change from plain old shrimp cocktail.

I love shrimp and old bay seasoning! I live in maryland in the summer so Im a huge fan of the “Eastern Shore” seafood and styles of cooking. Here, old bay is on everything!!!

Hi, I grew up in MD & remember the whole family crabbing at Chesapeake Beach, taking a barrel of crabs home & steaming them! That’s b4 we could afford to buy crabs. We, of course, grew up on Old Bay Seasoning – on shrimp, crabs, fish, French fries, etc… Enjoyed many crab feasts at home, relatives houses & with friends. I moved out of area, but still visit & love MD steamed crabs covered with Old Bay! 😀

We would buy crabs from the wharf in Washington DC, and also used to go crabbing when our family vacationed on Chincoteague Island. Now that I’m in CT, sometimes we order crabs from Maryland as a special treat!

Angie – the ingredient label for Old Bay Seasoning reads: CELERY SALT (SALT, CELERY SEED), SPICES (INCLUDING RED PEPPER AND BLACK PEPPER) AND PAPRIKA.

Probably because I’m from Philly and close enough to Maryland, I love me some old bay and shrimp too! We also sprinkle it over corn, wrap in foil with a pat of butter and grill. Heaven.

Yes, this can be made a few hours ahead of serving. I would refrigerate it once it’s cooled down and then take it out for a little while before serving if you don’t want it to be completely cold.

I dropped the amount of shrimp to 2 pounds and increased the Old Bay Seasoning to 2.5 teaspoons. It was a big hit at Friendsgiving.

Is this frozen cooked shrimp or non cooked? I am not the best cook, especially when it comes to seafood, but I’d love to give this a try for my party coming up.

Hi Jen – you will want to use raw shrimp. If you buy it frozen, just defrost it overnight in the refrigerator; otherwise, you can buy already defrosted shrimp at the supermarket or fish market. You want peeled, cleaned shrimp.

I was wondering if this could be made the night before a party or if it needs to be made on the same day? Also if frozen cooked shrimp could be used in this recipe?

Yes, you could make this the night before and just take it out an hour before the party so they’re not ice cold. For best flavor, I recommend using raw shrimp, but in a pinch, you could just season cooked shrimp with some old bay seasoning
