How To Find Happiness

It’s human nature to want to know how to find happiness. Take a look at 8 Factors That Contribute To Emotional and Mental Stability – these can help improve your outlook on life.
How To Find Happiness - 8 Factors That Contribute Greatly To Emotional and Mental Stability - based on a study by Duke University. Click through for a free downloadable printout of this list.

This past week, we had a bonus session for our Daniel Plan study group on Happiness and Contentment. Did you know that happiness depends 50% on your genetics, 40% on your internal state of mind, and 10% on life’s circumstances? That means we have control of at least 40% how we feel.

Our special speaker was the Community Pastor for Grace Community Church. He talked about an eye-opening study on happiness performed by Duke University that found 8 factors contribute greatly to emotional and mental stability:

How To Find Happiness - 8 Factors That Contribute Greatly To Emotional and Mental Stability - based on a study by Duke University. Click through for a free downloadable printout of this list. These points are all worth thinking about – I know I have experienced all 8 of these at some point in my life. Just think if everyone in the world had access to these 8 items and made a conscious decision to live each of these out on a daily basis, how different would our outlook on life be?

I highly recommend printing this list out and posting it somewhere that you can see it on a daily basis as a reminder that we can control 40% of our happiness. Click here to download this list.

Our speaker also provided Bible verses that complimented each of these eight points so we could reflect on these from a Christian perspective.
1. Avoid suspicion and resentment. Don’t nurse grudges. (The stoning of Stephen in Acts 7:54-60, Jesus on the cross Luke 23:34, Matthew 6:14)
2. Not living in the past. Preoccupation with old mistakes leads to depression. (2 Corinthians 5:17 – Therefore if anyone is in Christ he or she is a new creation; the old is gone, the new has come!)
3. Not wasting time and energy on things that can’t be changed (Matthew 6:25, 27 – Do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, nor about your body what you will wear…which of you by worrying can add a single hour to your life?)
4. Staying involved in living world. Emotional distress increases as we become reclusive and isolate ourselves. Solomon spoke of the importance of engaging in human relationships – two are better than one…for if they fall one will lift up the other. (Ecclesiastes 4:9-10)
5. Refusing to indulge in self-pity when handed a raw deal. Expect some sorrow and misfortune. (Philippians 4:11-12 – I have learned the secret of being content in any and all situations…)
6. Cultivating old fashioned virtues-love, humor, compassion, loyalty. (2 Peter 1:5-7 – For is very reason make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness knowledge, and to knowledge self-control.)
7. Not expecting too much of oneself..be aware of your limitations. (Hebrews 4:16 – Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.)
8. Find something bigger to believe in. Self centered, egotistical people scored lowest in any test measuring happiness.  (Matthew 6:33 – Seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness; Philippians 2:3 – Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather in humility value others above yourselves.)
This session was so interesting and helpful – I only wish more people were aware that they can do something to help swing their mental and emotional state towards happiness, and help discover how to find happiness for that 40% that we can control.

Please share this post if you found it helpful – if even one person can be happier as a result, it’s so worth it!

I love #2, been there, done that but luckily I have moved on. How can you face your present and future if you are keeping yourself in the past! By the way, thanks for your post, it’s truly helpful.
