I just read an article “Cut Fructose and Cancer Risk” highlighting the fact that sugar not only helps cancer cells survive, but can also fuel cancer cell growth (pancreatic) at a much higher rate.

By now, we have all heard that we should avoid processed foods, e.g., anything that has high fructose corn syrup, white sugar, refined white flour, artificial sweeteners, artificial colors, artificial flavors, preservatives…basically 90% of what we probably see on most supermarket shelves (other than Whole Foods or other natural foods stores)!
Soda, cereal, bread, pasta, pasta sauce, ketchup, canned soups, cookies, cakes, frozen prepared foods…

Let’s just focus on sugar for now, specifically high fructose corn syrup.  High fructose corn syrup has been linked to obesity, diabetes, heart disease, and now cancer.  While it may seem near impossible to completely avoid high fructose corn syrup, you can start taking baby steps to ensure that you and your family reduce your risk of developing any of these diseases.

Next time you’re in the store, pick up a box of cookies, cereal, or loaf of bread, and read the label.  If it has high fructose corn syrup listed in the ingredients, don’t buy it!  If it has artificial anything, don’t buy it!  If you don’t recognize most of the ingredients, don’t buy it!

The best way to ensure you’re not consuming any processed foods is, of course, to prepare all your meals so you know exactly what you’re putting into your and your family’s mouths.  However, since this is not practical for most working families, start by preparing one or two more meals a week than you already do…and next time you’re in the store, put that package down if it has any high fructose corn syrup.  That’s a start!
